Health insurer Aetna reported second quarter net income of $457.6 million for the three months ended June 30, 2012 — a 14.7 percent decline from last year's total of $536.7 million.
However, Aetna had a second-quarter increase of more than 100,000 members across all of its insurance lines. The increased membership helped boost total revenue almost 6 percent, from $8.34 billion in the second quarter of 2011 to $8.84 billion this year.
For the first six months of fiscal year 2012, Aetna's profit was down 13.7 percent, totaling $968.6 billion. Total revenue for the first six months rose 6 percent, from $16.7 billion to $17.8 billion.
