Several healthcare organizations received donations to fund research, advance treatments, improve patient care or start renovations in August.
Here are nine recent donations, grants or gifts given to healthcare organizations in the last month, reported by Becker's Hospital Review:
1. University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (Aurora) received the largest private gift in its history — a $120 million commitment from the Anschutz Foundation. The donation will support faculty recruitment and retention, research opportunities, industry partnerships and the construction of a 390,000-square-foot health science building.
2. Mission Health (Ashville, N.C.) pledged to donate $90 million to hospital foundations in six rural communities, but with a twist. The provider said the donation will only be made if its proposed sale to Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare closes. The funds, which would come from sale proceeds, would be distributed over a three-year period. The gifts would support programs to enhance the health and well-being of the rural communities.
3. Indiana University Health (Indianapolis) received a $10 million gift from Joe Schwarz, a self-made businessman who lost his battle to throat cancer five months ago, and his wife Shelly. The gift will support construction of a cancer center at IU Health North, based in Carmel, Ind. The cancer center, scheduled to open in January 2020, will be named after the donors.
4. Ronald McDonald House Charities, a nonprofit foundation seeking to improve the health and well-being of children, received a record-breaking $100 million gift from AbbVie. The gift, which is the largest in the charity's history, will expand access to housing and family-centered services for pediatric patients and their families during hospital stays.
5. Bryan Medical Center (Lincoln, Neb.) received the largest single donation in its 82-year history from the Acklie Charitable Foundation. The amount of the gift remains undisclosed. The private donation will support a $45 million expansion and renovation of Bryan's East Campus.
6. Erlanger Children's Hospital (Chattanooga, Tenn.) obtained a $5 million donation from the Kennedy Foundation — the single largest gift in its history. The donation will support the children's outpatient center, slated to open in December.
7. Partners in Health (Boston) is a foundation that broadens access to healthcare for marginalized populations. It received a "visionary" $15 million gift from the Wagner Foundation to establish new programs, including an effort to collect and store health data in remote Liberia, where health records are often difficult to come by.
8. The Valley Hospital (Ridgewood, N.J.) received two donations Aug. 15 totaling $35 million. The gifts, $15 million from Bolger Foundation and $20 million from an anonymous donor, will go toward construction of its 372-bed hospital in Paramus, N.J.
9. Parkland Health & Hospital System (Dallas) received a $1 million donation from the Hillcrest Foundation to support the construction of a comprehensive breast health center. The new center will replace its existing breast health center. With the $1 million donation, the health system has raised $36 million of its $40 million goal.
