For-profit health companies reported third-quarter results during October, revealing their debt levels as they did so. Here are some details on such systems' debt levels as well as nonprofits that have reported debt amounts through such sources as credit agencies.
- Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare reported long-term debt of $36.8 billion as of Sept. 30, a very similar number to levels at Dec. 31.
- Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare revealed long-term debt of $14.9 billion as of Sept. 30 when it reported net income of $101 million for the third quarter.
- Universal Health Services, based in King of Prussia, Pa., had long-term debt of $4.8 billion as of Sept. 30.
- Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems reported long-term debt of $11.8 billion as of Sept. 30. The system reported a net loss of $91 million for the third quarter.
- Wellstar MCG, formerly known as Augusta (Ga.) University Health before its takeover by Marietta, Ga.-based Wellstar Health, had long-term debt totaling $191.9 million as of June 30, Wellstar said when releasing fiscal 2023 results in October. Wellstar's own long-term debt totaled $1.6 billion.
- Shuttered Madera (Calif.) Community Hospital remained more than $30 million in debt even as it sold farmland for a higher-than-expected amount Oct. 24. The bankrupt hospital still owes approximately $35.4 million.
- Cincinnati-based Bon Secours Mercy Health had $4.9 billion of outstanding debt at the end of fiscal 2022, according to Moody's, which downgraded the system Oct. 5.
