Here are six hospitals that filed for bankruptcy protection or closed since March.
1. McNairy Regional Hospital closed May 18. The shut down of the Selmer, Tenn.-based hospital affected 125 employees.
2. Twenty lawsuits over surgeries performed by an orthopedic surgeon pushed Powell (Wyo.) Valley Healthcare, a single hospital system, to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May.
3. Colusa (Calif.) Regional Medical Center closed April 22. Hospital officials said they expected the 48-bed hospital's closure to affect about 200 workers.
4. Magee, Miss.-based Pioneer Health Services, which owns hospitals in Georgia, North Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee and Virginia, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April. System officials hope the bankruptcy process will stabilize operations.
5. St. Joseph's Hospital in Philadelphia closed March 11. As of late March, 400 of the hospital's 675 workers had secured new jobs.
6. SoutheastHEALTH in Cape Girardeau, Mo., closed Southeast Health Center of Reynolds County and its related clinics March 11. Before it closed, fewer than two beds on average were filled at the hospital each day.
