Medicaid is expected to absorb more than 11 million new enrollees over the next decade under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to a report called "Medicaid Expansion: New Patients, New Challenges," by PwC's Health Research Institute.
For the report, researchers analyzed government data and projections by the Congressional Budget Office to develop a detailed portrait of the new Medicaid population.
According to the report, the new Medicaid population will have the following characteristics:
• 74 percent of the new Medicaid population will be white
• 86 percent of the new Medicaid population will be in relatively good health
• 25 percent of the new Medicaid population will be married
• 34 percent of the new Medicaid population will speak a language other than English at home
• 89 percent of the new Medicaid population will not have a college degree
• 26 percent of the new Medicaid population will be employed full time
