A new Robert Wood Johnson Foundation report has found wide variation in coinsurance and copayments for silver plans offered on exchanges created under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
The report included the following findings:
- Silver plan copayments for primary care physician visits range from $0 to $75.
- Silver plan copayments for specialist visits range from $10 to $150.
- Silver plan coinsurance rates for primary care physician visits vary from zero to 50 percent.
- Silver plan coinsurance rates for specialist visits vary from 8 percent to 100 percent.
"This report highlights the complexity and variation of cost-sharing features in marketplace plans," said Katherine Hempstead, who leads coverage issues at Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, in a news release. "We need to find new ways to support plan choice so consumers can make decisions that are in their best interest, even in the face of considerable complexity."
