Hospital and health system revenue cycle leaders must navigate today's reimbursement climate and changing expectations related to the patient financial experience.
Here, three leaders share their advice for the journey with Becker's:
1. Deborah Vancleave, vice president of revenue cycle at St. Joseph, Mo.-based Mosaic Life Care: "Leverage advancements in technology and put more pressure on your payers to communicate out-of-pocket costs to their members."
2. Robert Mueller, vice president of revenue cycle at Boise, Idaho-based St. Luke's Health System: "Focus on developing revenue cycle leaders in your organization. You're only as good as what your leadership can do. I think that's what helped me be successful — training up leaders. I also think it's important to stay connected with operational leaders so that they understand the complexity of the revenue cycle, and you can work with them when changes occur and have to be implemented."
3. Jim Meyers, system vice president of revenue cycle at Louisville, Ky.-based Norton Healthcare: "Reach out and network with your peers. The best consultant many times is a colleague or someone else in that situation. We are all dealing with many of the same challenges, and there are occasions where someone just may have figured it out. I've found time and time again how receptive, informative and gracious my contacts are, and I value them tremendously."
