3 record-breaking healthcare donations in 2024

Among the financial gifts made to hospitals, health systems and medical schools in 2024, Becker's reported on three that marked the largest donations in the organizations' histories.

1. Coral Gables, Fla.-based Baptist Health South Florida received $50 million from Citadel CEO Ken Griffin in March.

The donation was made with the intention of advancing care and research for neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease. The funds will help build the Kenneth C. Griffin Center at Miami Neuroscience Institute, with an anticipated groundbreaking in 2025 and opening in 2027.

2. Tampa Bay, Fla.-based BayCare and St. Joseph's Children's Foundation also received a $50 million donation this year.

The gift came from philanthropist Sidd Pagidipati and his siblings Rahul and Srujani and will fund a freestanding children's hospital, which is expected to open by 2030. It was the largest publicly recorded gift to a Tampa Bay hospital, the system said.

3. New York City-based Montefiore's Albert Einstein College of Medicine will use a $1 billion donation to offer free tuition to medical school students.

Ruth Gottesman, EdD, chair of the Einstein board of trustees and Montefiore Health System board member, made the donation in February. Montefiore Einstein President and CEO Philip Ozuah, MD, PhD, announced the gift, which is likely the largest made to any U.S. medical school.
