21 states overbill Medicare above the national average

CMS has released the "Medicare Fee-for-Service 2015 Improper Payments Report," which reports improper payment rate for 2015 was 12.1 percent.

Here are 21 states with above average improper payment rates, according to the Council for Medicare Integrity. States are listed in order form highest percentage of improper payment rates to the lowest.

Louisiana
•    Projected improper payment rate: 19.4 percent
•    Projected overpayments: $1.25 billion

Texas
•    Projected improper payment rate: 17.3 percent
•    Projected overpayments: $4.3 billion

North Dakota
•    Projected improper payment rate: 17.1 percent
•    Projected overpayments: $100 million

Wyoming
•    Projected improper payment rate: 16.7 percent
•    Projected overpayments: $63.9 million

Georgia
•    Projected improper payment rate: 16.5 percent
•    Projected overpayments: $1.61 million

New Mexico
•    Projected improper payment rate: 15.6 percent
•    Projected overpayments: $212 million

Kentucky
•    Projected improper payment rate: 15.4 percent
•    Projected overpayments: $897.7 million

Oklahoma
•    Projected improper payment rate: 15.4 percent
•    Projected overpayments: $658.1 million

Illinois
•    Projected improper payment rate: 14.7 percent
•    Projected overpayments: $2.53 billion

Alabama
•    Projected improper payment rate: 14.3 percent
•    Projected overpayments: $885.6 million

Ohio
•    Projected improper payment rate: 13.7 percent
•    Projected overpayments: $1.79 billion

New Jersey
•    Projected improper payment rate: 13.7 percent
•    Projected overpayments: $1.78 billion

Mississippi
•    Projected improper payment rate: 13.7 percent
