20 states with the highest percentage of price transparency compliant hospitals

A July 20 report from patientrightsadvocate.org found that 36 percent of the 2,000 hospitals reviewed are complying with the federal price transparency rule that went into effect in January 2021.

Here are the 20 states with the highest percentage of compliant hospitals, according to the report (the list includes Washington, D.C.):

1. Hawaii: 75 percent

T-2. Nevada: 74 percent

T-2. Kentucky: 74 percent

4. Nebraska: 71 percent

5. Mississippi: 68 percent

6. Utah: 58 percent

7. North Carolina: 57 percent

8. North Dakota: 56 percent

9. California: 55 percent

T-10. Tennessee: 52 percent

T-10: Colorado: 52 percent

T-12: District of Columbia: 50 percent

T-12. Delaware: 50 percent

The American Hospital Association has pushed back against price transparency compliance reports from groups other than CMS. The AHA has argued that these groups are ignoring CMS' guidance on aspects of the rule, such as how to fill in an individual negotiated rate when such a rate does not exist due to patient services being bundled and billed together.
