15 grants, donations to healthcare organizations in October

Numerous healthcare organizations recently received donations to fund research, advance treatments, improve patient care and start renovations in the past month.

Here are 15 recent donations, grants or gifts given to healthcare organizations by various entities in October, beginning with the most recent.

1. St. Mary's in Maine receives record-breaking $10M gift with one ask from donor: Use it for people, not buildings
Lewiston, Maine-based St. Mary's Health System received a record-breaking $10 million gift from the Albert Lepage Foundation, with one caveat — the money must be used on people and cannot be spent on buildings or infrastructure.

2. U of Kansas Hospital receives $10M gift toward its new facility
Kansas City-based University of Kansas Hospital received a $10 million gift from Cheryl Lockton Williams to supply its new tower — Cambridge Tower A — with medical equipment and furnishings.

3. $19M in grants to go toward addiction services in New York State
New York State was awarded $19 million in grants to combat addiction.  

4. Gilead awards $7.5M to 5 medical institutions to advance HIV research
Gilead Sciences, a California pharmaceutical company, awarded $7.5 million to five healthcare organizations to advance research on HIV.

5. Columbus Marathon raises $1M for Nationwide Children's Hospital
The 2017 Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon and Half Marathon, which took place Oct. 15, raised $1.2 million for Columbus, Ohio-based Nationwide Children's Hospital. 

6. Dolly Parton gives $1M gift to Vanderbilt children's hospital
Dolly Parton donated $1 million to Nashville, Tenn.-based Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt on Friday.

7. Houston Methodist Hospital receives record-breaking $101M donation
Houston Methodist Hospital received a $101 million donation from Rusty and Paula Walter — the largest philanthropic gift in the hospital's 98-year history. 

8. MUSC Children's Hospital receives $5M donation toward $385M hospital project
Charleston-based Medical University of South Carolina Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital received a $5 million donation from the Zucker family, which will be used toward the facility's $385 million project. 

9. U of Mass Medical School founds Institute for Rare Diseases Research with $10M gift from Chinese businessman
Worchester-based University of Massachusetts Medical School will establish an Institute for Rare Disease Research with a $10 million endowment from Chinese businessman Li Weibo's foundation.

10. Donations to help foot part of uninsured shooting victims' hospital bills, Las Vegas hospital says
Las Vegas-based University Medical Center of Southern Nevada will use the donations it has received to cover "as much of the uninsured expense as [the hospital] possibly can" for those injured during the Oct. 1 shooting.

11. Michael Jordan donates $7M to Novant Health
Michael Jordan, basketball legend and majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets, is donating $7 million to Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health to build two medical clinics.  

12. Cottage Children's Medical Center receives $54k gift
Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Cottage Children's Medical Center received a $54,067 check from two local credit unions last week.

13. Researchers at U of Alabama Birmingham receive $6.5M grant to investigate gout
University of Alabama Birmingham Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology researchers received a $6.5 million grant to study gout and hyperuricemia. 

14. Gottlieb Memorial Hospital receives $12.8M gift for hospital renovation project
Melrose Park, Ill.-based Gottlieb Memorial Hospital received a $12.8 million pledge from the Gottlieb Memorial Foundation to help fund its emergency department renovation. 

15. Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center awarded $5M grant to study kidney transplantation outcomes
Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center received a $5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the effects of a genetic variation in donors that appears to contribute to positive kidney transplant outcomes.
