About 11.4 million people signed up for private health coverage in the 2015 open enrollment period for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama's administration recently announced.
The open enrollment period began Nov. 15, 2014 and ended Feb. 15. In the last day of the second open enrollment period, more new consumers signed up for health coverage than on any other day in 2014 or 2015 open enrollment periods, the White House said.
"The Affordable Care Act is working," President Obama said. "And I'll tell you, everywhere I go around the country, I'm meeting individuals who come up and thank me. How passionate they are about the difference it's made in their lives, it really reminds me why we do all of this."
President Obama's administration anticipates that 9.1 million people will pay their premiums and keep coverage in effect through this year, according to a report by Politico.
The report notes that the White House's 11.4 million preliminary estimate is certain to climb due to deadline extensions.
President Obama's administration is extending the deadline until Sunday for people who couldn't sign up last weekend due to long waits or technical problems with the Healthcare.gov website, and most states also have extended deadlines for some people, according to USA Today.
