10 most, least concentrated hospital markets

The hospital market in New York City is the least concentrated in the country, while Springfield, Mo., is home to the most concentrated market, according to an analysis from the Health Care Cost Institute.

For the study, researchers analyzed more than 1.8 billion commercial healthcare claims from 2012-16 across 112 metro areas.

Here are the 10 most concentrated hospital markets HCCI studied:

1. Springfield, Mo.
2. Peoria, Ill.
3. Cape Coral, Fla.
4. Greensboro, N.C.
5. Durham, N.C.
6. Albuquerque, N.M.
7. Fort Collins, Colo.
8. Provo, Utah
9. Reno, Nev.
10. Omaha, Neb.

Here are the 10 least concentrated hospital markets HCCI studied:

1. New York City
2. Riverside, Calif.
3. Philadelphia
4. Miami
5. Chicago
6. Washington, D.C.
7. Baltimore
8. Cincinnati
9. Providence, R.I.
10. Seattle
