The Georgia Department of Community Health recently approved an emergency department expansion project at Augusta-based University Hospital, reports North Augusta Star.
The $30 million project will upgrade the ED's capacity from 55 treatment spaces to 78, which will contain 60 ED beds, 12 pediatric treatment spaces and six psychiatric spaces, according to the report.
The new ED will feature nursing station hubs at the center of 12-room pods to create a more streamlined workflow for physicians, according to the report. Each pod will function independently as a mini ED within the larger department.
Additional features include an updated lobby, smaller conversation spaces, formal security post and a rapid assessment triage area, reports North Augusta Star.
The project, already underway, is expected to be completed in two and a half years.
