University of Chicago Medicine will open its Level 1 adult trauma center May 1, 2018, reports Crain's Chicago Business.
Here are four things to know.
- While Chicago is home to four other designated trauma centers, UChicago Medicine's will be the only adult trauma facility on the city's South Side.
- Selwyn Rogers Jr., MD, chief of trauma and acute care surgery at UChicago Medicine, will head the new trauma center.
- UChicago Medicine plans to staff the center with six trauma surgeons, five of which have already been recruited.
- The trauma center is part of a larger $270 million expansion project. UChicago Medicine will also expand its emergency room, add 188 impatient beds and build a cancer institute, according to the report.
