UC San Diego plans to construct a new hospital as part of a Hillcrest campus transformation, reports The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Here are four things to know about the project.
1. UC San Diego plans to replace the current UC San Diego Medical Center on the Hillcrest campus.
2. State seismic regulations factored into the decision to build the new hospital. In California, older hospitals must be upgraded to withstand earthquakes by 2030. Hospitals that don't will be forced to close, Robert Clossin, UC San Diego's director of physical and community planning, told The San Diego Union-Tribune, noting the idea is to replace the hospital rather than spending money on expensive upgrades at the current facility.
3. Planners are considering several spots on the Hillcrest campus for the new hospital.
4. UC San Diego is also looking at the possibility of converting some existing low-rise buildings on the Hillcrest campus into taller structures for office space or housing for staff and faculty members, according to the report.
