Memphis, Tenn.-based St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has completed the renovation of three patient care floors, with features including unique wood sculptures — great for climbing — and "journey walls", or interactive glass walls with LEDs, sound systems and facts about nature, space and other topics.
Floors three, four and five of the Kay Research and Care Center will open to patients Sept. 20, according to the Memphis Business Journal, but press got to tour the hospital this week.
In addition to redesigning the patient floors, the renovation expanded patient rooms from 327 square feet each to 527 square feet, according to The Commercial Appeal. A sleeper sofa, recline and full bath are in each room, and the lighting color can change depending on the patient's wishes.
Two rooms are specifically designed for teens and preteens as well.
Patients and family members had input on the new floors' design. "They lived through this experience," James R. Downing, MD, the hospital's president and CEO, told The Commercial Appeal.
