Plaza Medical Center to build $64M ED

Fort Worth, Texas-based Plaza Medical Center will construct a $64 million facility, nearly doubling its emergency and intensive care capacity to meet increasing demand, reports Star-Telegram

The expansion will be completed in phases. The first phase includes a 104,000-sqaure-foot, three-story facility that will cost $34 million and be joined to the hospital's main campus via an elevated crosswalk. The level-three trauma center will include a roof helipad and 30 beds.

The next $30 million phase will include the second and third floors of the facility. The second floor will house a 28-bed intensive care unit with 16 beds allocated for stroke and neurosurgery patients and 12 used for liver patients. The third floor will be left uncompleted for future expansion, Plaza Medical Center CEO Clay Franklin told Star-Telegram.

Plaza Medical Center's old ED will be converted to a cardiology unit. Overall, the expansion will add 130 full-time jobs to Plaza Medical Center, which currently employs more than 1,100, according to the report.

The facility is set to open in mid-2018.
