Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin said it will not reopen its Appleton North clinic after temporarily closing it, leaving Madison and Milwaukee as the state's only cities offering women's healthcare services including abortions, according to The Cap Times.
The clinic temporarily suspended abortion services in October 2015, citing staff shortages. After a gunman attacked a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colo., the next month, the organization reviewed security measures in each of its facilities throughout the nation.
Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin determined the Appleton North facility could not meet the "more stringent and scrutinized approach" to security the organization sought to implement following the attack, in which three people were killed and nine were injured, according to COO Chris Williams.
Mr. Williams told The Cap Times the decision is not a response to a specific threat, but to "constant threats" that each Planned Parenthood site faces.
The clinic has faced previous threats, however. In 2012, a homemade explosive device damaged the Appleton North clinic. No one was in the building at the time of the explosion, according to the report.
Another clinic in Appleton, which provides cancer screenings, birth control and STD testing, will remain open, according to the report.
