Mercy Medical Center is planning a $500 million expansion project at its main campus in Des Moines, Iowa.
Plans call for the construction of an 11-story hospital tower, a new power plant, parking garage and parking lot, representing a 2.3 acre expansion to the downtown campus. The hospital will also demolish Mercy Office Plaza and Mercy Park Apartments to make more room for parking.
The hospital's current inpatient towers were constructed in the 1970s and its patient rooms are not large enough to comfortably fit modern medical equipment, said Sandy Swanson, director for strategic projects at Mercy Medical Center.
Once the new tower is built, the existing inpatient buildings will be converted into offices, storage and clinical space.
Ms. Swanson estimates the project to be completed within the next five to eight years.
