Louisville, Ky.-based Kosair Children's Hospital will say goodbye to its McDonald's at the end of the year. The announcement of the decision coincides with an advertising campaign calling for the hospital to "Nix The Nuggets" is unveiled next week, according to the Courier-Journal.
"The lease for McDonald's expires at the end of the year and we have no plans to renew it," said Maggie Roetker, director of public relations for Louisville-based Norton Healthcare, of which Kosair Children's is a part, on Thursday.
The $4,625 advertising campaign funded by the Physician Committee for Responsible Medicine decries the "greasy burgers and nuggets" at McDonalds, which "feed disease," the advertisements say.
PCRM is a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., and was founded by Neal Barnard, MD. The PCRM emphasizes prevention and vegan nutrition to combat the national epidemic of obesity and other chronic diseases.
"Banning the Big Macs will benefit the health of visitors, patients and staff at Kosair Children's Hospital," said Karen Smith, senior dietitian at the Physicians Committee, according to the report.
