Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Lutheran Hospital will begin a $6.1 million expansion and renovation of its emergency department early this spring, with hope the expansion will generate efficiencies for staff and patients.
Here are four things to know about the project.
1. The ED expansion includes the construction of an eight-bed, 3,900-square-foot transition unit to be located adjacent to the existing 16,600-square-foot adult ED. Officials said the area will allow for short-term patient monitoring while freeing exam rooms when the ED is busiest.
2. Other parts of the project include the addition of a CT scanner in the ED, a fifth trauma bay to accommodate multiple critical patients and four rooms designated as a results waiting area.
3. Including the eight-bed transition unit, Lutheran Hospital's ED will house a total of 36 beds and 20,500-square-feet of space once completed.
4. Construction will occur in five phases to allow operations at the facility to continue smoothly. Phase one will begin in April. Officials expect the final phase to be completed by October 2018.
