Cleveland Clinic opened its first regional Ohio hospital — at an estimated cost of more than $161 million — Nov. 15.
The five-story, 212,000-square-foot Cleveland Clinic Avon (Ohio) Hospital was built onto the north side of the Avon-based Richard E. Jacobs Health Center. The Avon Hospital houses 126 private rooms, an intensive care unit, operating rooms, a cardiac catheterization lab, a pharmacy and a lab. Richard E. Jacobs' emergency and radiology departments were expanded under the project.
"Avon Hospital marks a historic advance for Cleveland Clinic," Toby Cosgrove, MD, president and CEO of Cleveland Clinic, said in a prepared statement. "This is the first regional hospital we've designed and built from the ground up. This is a new kind of hospital for a new era."
Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital will be one of the most tech-savvy facilities in northeast Ohio, as all physicians, nurses and clinical staff will communicate via wireless devices, according to a hospital release. Every private room has an interactive TV giving patients direct access to their EMRs, personalized medical education videos and room temperature control. The hospital was also designed to accommodate future medical advances.
More than 500 individuals were hired to staff the hospital.
