The Pittsburgh Planning Commission approved on Oct. 23 UPMC's plan to build a vision and rehabilitation hospital in Pittsburgh as part of the system's $2 billion expansion plan, according to Trib Live.
Here are three things to know:
1. The Pittsburgh-based health system announced plans to construct three specialty hospitals in the city in November 2017. In September, officials revealed the architects hired to construct the three hospitals: UPMC Heart and Transplant Hospital, UPMC Hillman Cancer Hospital and UPMC Vision and Rehabilitation Hospital.
2. The nine-story hospital will feature surgical and clinical facilities on the first four floors and space for clinical and academic research on the top five floors.
3. The city planning commission unanimously approved the hospital's construction during the Oct. 23 meeting, where there was reportedly no opposition from the public. Construction on the vision and rehabilitation hospital is expected to begin next year and last roughly 36 months.
