CHI Franciscan Health, Kindred Healthcare break ground on $25M rehab facility

Tacoma, Wash.-based CHI Franciscan Health and Louisville, Ky.-based Kindred Healthcare broke ground July 10 on a $25 million rehabilitation hospital in Tacoma.

The 60-bed acute rehabilitation hospital will offer specialized treatment programs for patients recovering from stroke, brain injury, neurological conditions, trauma, spinal cord injury, amputation and orthopedic injury. An interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, case managers, social workers and dieticians will staff the new facility.

"Our partnership with Kindred allows us to expand access to much needed post-acute rehabilitation services for the growing South Sound population," said Ketul J. Patel, CEO of CHI Franciscan Health. "We're dedicated to meeting the needs of our region and we look forward to working with Kindred to provide our communities with a full continuum of healthcare services."

In 2016, CHI Franciscan Health's St. Joseph Medical Center served more than 600 patients in its inpatient rehabilitation unit. Of those, 455 were 60 or older, and the number of patients seeking services is expected to rise as residents in the region age.
