Self Regional Healthcare completes transition to Epic EHR

Greenwood, S.C.-based Self Regional Healthcare completed its four-year implementation of the Epic EHR system, according to an Index-Journal report.

Self Regional is now one of a dozen other healthcare systems in South Carolina that use Epic. Costs for the transition were phased over the four years.

The transition was not without its problems, however. Self Regional's previous IT system and the new Epic system were both running at the same time at one point during the rollout, creating back end issues for staff. Self Regional and Greenville (S.C.) Health System eventually entered into a deal wherein in Self Regional could use Greenville's hardware and servers to increase data capacity, according to the report.

"For us, it was focusing on the patient," Andy Hartung, assistant vice president and CIO at Self Regional Healthcare told the Index-Journal. "There's many ways you can slice up how you do an electronic medical record. Epic brings a single source, so that's the value."
