Most hospitals, 95 percent, have adopted an EHR, but system data is used differently by hospitals depending on their chosen vendor, according to an ONC analysis.
The report uses data from the American Hospital Association's Information Technology Survey to analyze EHR data use trends among nonfederal acute care hospitals in 2017. Data from hospitals with the following EHR vendors was used: Allscripts, Cerner, CPSI, Epic, McKesson, MediTech, MedHost and other.
Five survey insights:
1. Epic, MediTech and Cerner were the vendors with the highest use of data to inform clinical practice.
2. Supporting quality improvement was the highest-used aspect of EHR data for hospitals with select EHRs. Eighty-nine percent of respondents with Cerner said they use EHR data most for quality improvement measure, while 96 percent of Epic users and 88 percent of MediTech users reported the same.
3. Monitoring patient safety was the most-used aspect of EHR data for hospitals that have select EHRs. Sixty-nine percent of respondents with CPSI reported using the patient safety aspect of the EHR most, while 74 percent of McKesson users, 66 percent of Medhost users and 64 percent of other EHR users said the same.
4. Hospitals with EHR vendors besides Epic and Allscripts were least likely to use data to develop an approach for querying patient data. Seventy-six percent of hospitals with Epic said they were least likely to use their EHR data to make strategic planning decisions, and 49 percent of hospitals that use Allscripts were least likely to use data to assess adherence to guidelines.
5. Hospitals with CPSI, Medhost and unspecified EHR vendors were more likely to report a lack of EHR data use.
