Mayo Clinic adds symptoms assessment tool to Epic patient portal

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic developed an online symptoms assessment tool for patients to access through Epic's patient portal, MyChart.

To access the tool, called Ask Mayo Clinic online, patients at participating health systems select the "Ask Mayo Clinic" navigation option within MyChart. The option is available via any internet-connected computer or mobile device.

Ask Mayo Clinic online provides patients with care recommendations based on their responses to a series of guided questions about symptoms. To reach its recommendations, the tool runs 26 algorithms that cover more than 300 common symptoms.

"Care guidance, based on the user's selection of symptoms and responses to relevant questions, includes more information about possible causes tied to the symptoms, and, in most cases, provides recommendations on home care in nonemergent situations," said Sandhya Pruthi, MD, associate medical director of Mayo Clinic Global Business Solutions.
