KLAS' EHR market share breakdown: Cerner holds 25% of hospitals

Backed by the support of smaller hospitals and its scalable clinical systems, Cerner has secured a quarter of the overall U.S. hospital EHR market share, according to KLAS Research.

For its June 2021 Cerner Complete Look report, KLAS examined the Kansas City, Mo.-based vendor's performance and market share based on customer interviews and analysis. KLAS released the report to offer a more comprehensive outlook on Cerner's hold on the hospital EHR market share without comparison to other major EHR vendors.

Cerner's broad technology across its Millennium EHR products has helped clients reduce third-party solutions and achieve consistency across clinician workflows; however, the vendor's weaknesses include a challenging patient accounting module for large organizations and limited adoption because of the significant amount of internal resources needed for setting up and customizing its technology, according to KLAS.

In a June 8 statement shared with Becker's Hospital Review, a Cerner spokesperson said, "Serving clients is Cerner’s 'north star.' Even though healthcare is constantly evolving, we aim to meet client commitments and exceed their expectations. We will continue to work with our clients and KLAS to better understand how Cerner can deliver technology and tools that make providers more effective in improving their healthcare outcomes.”

When breaking down Cerner's hold of the U.S. acute care hospital market share, KLAS examined data as of Dec. 31, 2020, from 971 multihospital organizations, 223 community/critical access standalone hospitals and 57 large/midsize standalone hospitals.

KLAS found that Cerner maintains 25 percent of the hospital EHR market and 27 percent of hospital beds.

Here are Cerner's additional rankings, according to KLAS:

  • Combined overall product suite grade: C
  • Combined overall loyalty grade: C+
  • Percent of customers satisfied: 62 percent
  • Percent of customers reporting deep different-vendor interoperability: 28 percent
