KLAS: 5 clinical documentation vendors, ranked by workflow efficiency

KLAS Research released a report on clinical documentation improvement in September to evaluate which software vendors and services firms provide support that drives workflow efficiency and financial gains.

For the report, the health IT research firm interviewed nearly 200 respondents — including C-suite executives, directors and managers — from 170 hospitals and clinics about their experiences with clinical documentation improvement software vendors, such as what functionalities the vendors offer and how frequently their organization uses these capabilities.

Here's how five software vendors stacked up when respondents were asked about their ability to help drive efficient workflows. Respondents ranked the firms on a scale of 1 to 9.

1. Iodine Software (based on 15 customers): 8.3

2. Nuance (based on 18 customers): 7.8

2. ChartWise (based on 18 customers): 7.8

4. Optum: (based on 17 customers): 7.5

5. 3M (based on 22 customers): 6.6

KLAS Research noted respondents expressed support for Nuance and ChartWise's dedication to offering customers face-to-face training on how to improve workflows of clinical documentation specialists. ChartWise has developed its integration with EMRs more extensively than other vendors, according to KLAS.

The report  provided data on two other vendors: M*Modal (7.7) and nThrive (6.8), but KLAS said the limited number of respondents using these products in its sample hindered the firm from generalizing its findings.
