HIMSS proposes new definition of interoperability

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society has proposed a new definition for interoperability. The comment period on the definition is open until March 30.

HIMSS redefined interoperability as "the ability of different information systems, devices or applications to connect, in a coordinated matter, within and across organizational boundaries to access, exchange and cooperatively use data amongst stakeholders, with the goal of optimizing the health of individuals and populations."

HIMSS previously defined interoperability as "the ability of different information technology systems and software applications to communicate, exchange data and use the information that has been exchanged."
