Mishawaka, Ind.-based Franciscan Health is testing an EHR training program that aims to provide nurses with hands-on experience with care documentation during patient procedures.
Ashley Leising, a health informatics graduate student at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, worked with Franciscan Health's simulation lab supervisor and staff to develop the project. Ms. Leising and her team created and integrated training modules in the EHR for patient code, stroke and adverse reactions to chemotherapy.
Ms. Leising analyzed nurses' simulation performances with and without aid of the EHRs from both pre- and post-training. Results showed the EHR training decreased the amount of time the nurses needed to interact with the EHR, which allowed them to spend more time on patient care.
Franciscan Health plans to expand its EHR training and simulation integration throughout its 13 hospitals.
