Coast Guard approaching Cerner EHR go live

The U.S. Coast Guard will begin to deploy its new Cerner EHR system during the fourth quarter of 2019.

While providing an update on federal business during its third-quarter earnings call Oct. 24, the Kansas City, Mo.-based EHR vendor announced that the Coast Guard will kick off its EHR go live this quarter. Cerner's third quarter of 2019 ended Sept. 28, during which the EHR vendor reported a 7 percent increase in revenue at $1.43 billion.

Coast Guard announced in April 2018 that it would move to the same Cerner EHR system as the Department of Defense, called MHS Genesis. DOD is currently under a 10-year, $4.3 billion contract with Cerner to develop and deploy the EHR system.

In September, DOD went live on MHS Genesis at four sites in California and Idaho. The department plans to deploy subsequent waves of the EHR approximately every three months beginning in spring 2020, with all military hospitals and clinics expected to transition to the system by 2023.

Coast Guard and DOD's EHR system is also designed to be interoperable with Department of Veterans Affairs' EHR, which Cerner is also developing. The EHR vendor is continuing to increase its hold in the federal space and announced on Oct. 18 its agreement to acquire AbleVets, an IT consulting and engineering firm focused on federal health clients.
