Athenahealth, Meditech lead acute care EHR market, KLAS report finds

Small and midsize healthcare organizations rate Athenahealth and Meditech as the top performing emerging EHR systems among the market, according to a recent KLAS Research report.

For its Emerging Acute Care EMRs 2019 report, KLAS examined data from more than 200 acute care organizations in the one to 200 bed market. The report analyzes adoption and development trends of new acute care EHR platforms from the following vendors: Athenahealth, eClinicialWorks, Meditech and Epic. Only Athenahealth and Meditech have live customers.

Three things to know:

1. The number of hospitals in contract with the vendors is as follows:

· Meditech: 134.
· Athenahealth: 117.
· Epic: 3.
· EClinicialWorks: 3.

2. Of the hospitals with an Athenahealth EHR, 69 percent said they have experienced a positive financial impact after transitioning to the system. Forty percent of Meditech hospitals said they experienced a positive financial impact after moving to a Meditech system.

3. When asked to rate their EHR system's overall satisfaction score on a 100-point scale, hospitals with an Athenahealth system said 81.8, while hospitals with a Meditech system said 84.4. There was no data provided for Epic and eClinicalWorks because the vendors had no live customers.
