Athenahealth adds prescription medication notifications to EHR system

Healthcare technology company Athenahealth is partnering with healthcare information company DrFirst to reduce prescription abandonment.

Athenahealth will use DrFirst's RxInform system to send messages to patients' mobile phones when a clinician sends an order to a pharmacy. These messages may contain cost-saving information or details regarding the prescription, according to the Aug. 2 press release.

"Primary care providers and specialists who care for high-risk patients need tools to help people take their medications as prescribed," said G. Cameron Deemer, president of DrFirst. "We're pleased to partner with Athenahealth to give its network of approximately 145,000 providers access to the RxInform platform so they can help patients overcome the common hurdles that lead them to abandon their medications at the pharmacy."
