Epic and Cerner are the only two EHR vendors that offer live artificial intelligence capabilities, but Allscripts and Meditech are developing platforms for their client bases, according to KLAS Research.
For its Healthcare EMR AI 2020 report, KLAS examined customer satisfaction with EHR vendors' AI solutions and progress with developing capabilities. Here are four updates on Epic, Cerner, Meditech and Allscripts' AI platforms, according to KLAS:
1. Epic is the only EHR vendor whose AI platform has enough live customers to gauge a customer satisfaction score, which is 86.8 based on a 100-point scale. Most of Epic's AI customers are "out-of-the-box" users, meaning they use prebuilt machine learning models from Epic's Model Library.
The company's clinical voice assistant, Hey Epic!, is currently available and ambient listening is in development.
2. Cerner has fewer than 10 customers for its AI platform, most of which are in the pilot phase. The company's machine learning development platform allows customers to build and deploy their own algorithms, and Cerner's partnership with Amazon Web Services last year allowed the AI capabilities to become cloud-based, bringing in data from various sources.
3. Meditech is developing AI capabilities that do not require an AI platform or prebuilt machine learning models. The company plans to pilot its voice-enabled virtual assistant for patient charting in the third quarter of 2020 and is currently in the research phase of its ambient listening technology.
4. Allscripts has been using client data for some internal AI and machine learning projects for the last several years. The company is close to developing a marketable product for machine learning and is currently working on a model to predict acute kidney injury.
