Springfield, Ill.-based Hospital Sisters Health System is donating 200 beds to hospitals in Tanzania, Nigeria and Lebanon, local news outlet WCIA reported Nov. 29.
The beds will come from five HSHS facilities in Wisconsin and Illinois. The health system is in the process of standardizing its beds, and the donations are made up of the out-of-service beds getting replaced.
So far, 129 beds are on the way to Africa and the Middle East.
"It's been a huge success," Erica Smith, executive director of HSHS mission outreach, told WCIA. "We had one example of beds that we got in Green Bay that were on a container to Tanzania within two weeks. So it's amazing, it is a blessing for us, and it's also a blessing for many people around the world who otherwise may not have something as simple as a hospital bed to receive care or recover in."
