Pittsburgh-based UPMC Enterprises and Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt Health have signed on to a digital consortium with nine other health systems to develop and invest in new healthcare technologies.
Startup studio Aegis Ventures welcomed UPMC Enterprises, the innovation and venture capital arm of UPMC, and Vanderbilt to the collaborative that started in April out of a partnership with New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health.
"We launched the digital consortium on the founding premise that health systems should be in the driver's seat when it comes to innovation," said John Noseworthy, MD, chair of the digital consortium and emeritus president and CEO of Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic, in a Nov. 19 statement. "By aligning incentives between innovators and health systems, we create sustainable technologies that are better for patients, providers and administrators."
The consortium's initial four startups focus on patient engagement, artificial intelligence-powered diagnostics, workflow automation, and empathetic AI.
Other members include Endeavor Health (Evanston, Ill.), Indiana University Health (Indianapolis), Memorial Hermann Health System (Houston), Novant Health (Winston-Salem, N.C.), Ochsner Health (New Orleans), Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (Columbus), Sharp HealthCare (San Diego), and Stanford Health Care (Palo Alto, Calif.).
