How UPMC is using AI to create notes

Pittsburgh-based UPMC is using Abridge's artificial intelligence software at scale to generate clinical notes by allowing it to hear patient conversations, local news outlet Fox43 reported Sept. 18.

Physicians can use the software to record patient conversations from their phones. Abridge can summarize the conversation and separate the notes into key sections, such as symptoms and plans of action. Clinicians still have the opportunity to review the full recordings and update the AI-generated summaries.

So far, UPMC is using the technology at 12 facilities. The news comes after UPMC announced that it would be switching to Epic as its EHR vendor. In August, Epic partnered with Abridge through its 'Partnership and Pals' integration program.
