Healthcare organizations ramp up AI use in imaging tasks

More than half of healthcare organizations are using artificial intelligence for at least one medical imaging task, up from 17% in 2018, according to a recent report from KLAS Research.

The report is based on interviews with 206 U.S.-based organizations conducted between May 2023 and April 2024. Respondents included imaging groups (about 25%) and health systems. The report aims to provide an early look at popular and widely considered AI tools in the imaging market.

Six things to know from the report:

  1. Organizations that handle more imaging studies annually are more likely to already be using AI. Midsize and some smaller organizations (those handling 100,000–499,000 studies annually) are the most likely to adopt AI soon, with more than 30% planning their first use.

  2. Forty-seven percent of respondents said they are considering purchasing an AI platform, though current usage remains relatively low.

  3. Respondents reported using 65 commercial AI solutions for imaging, along with in-house solutions, primarily in standalone settings.

  4. RapidAI and Viz.ai are the leading AI platforms. RapidAI is predominantly used by large organizations for neurovascular applications, such as stroke detection. Viz.ai is also widely used for stroke detection in head CTs and has been adopted by some midsize and smaller organizations.

  5. Aidoc is the most considered AI solution, with many midsize and large organizations using it for neurological and chest conditions, such as pulmonary embolisms and intracranial hemorrhages.

  6. Approximately 75% of organizations considering an AI solution already have specific products and applications in mind, according to the report.
