Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare is using Google's AI-powered nurse-handoff note, which is gaining positive traction from its workforce, Bloomberg reported July 30.
The nurse handoff note allows providers to leverage artificial intelligence to improve workflows on time-consuming clerical tasks. The tool was developed by HCA using Google's AI and is being tested at four HCA Healthcare hospitals in Tennessee and Florida.
HCA reported that in a recent internal survey, 89% of the nurses testing the technology found it to be "somewhat" or "very" helpful.
Additionally, HCA is using a platform that uses ambient clinical documentation from Augmedix and Google's generative AI to draft EHR notes for ED visits.
This tool is available at four HCA emergency room facilities, according to Bloomberg.
When physicians utilize the technology, each one must meticulously review the AI-generated notes before entering the data into a patient's electronic health record, Michael Schlosser, HCA Healthcare's senior vice president of care transformation and innovation told Bloomberg.
An HCA representative added that the feedback provided by physicians and nurses who verify the AI's output is subsequently used to further train the AI.
"We see improvements in the technology week over week using this technique," Harlow Sumerford, a spokesperson for HCA told Bloomberg in an email statement.
HCA also said humans must be in the loop and that physicians are responsible for approving and confirming the accuracy of the information generated by AI, no matter how advanced the tech becomes.
