Why Tennessee medical center shut down for a week after cyberattack

The CEO who had to shut down his Tennessee medical center to deal with a cyberattack said it was one the hardest things he's ever had to do in healthcare, WKRN reported.

"It was a tough decision but it's one we needed to make," Joey Peay, chief executive of Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Medical Clinic & SurgiCenter, told the news outlet. "I would not wish this on anybody."

Still, he said he was pleased his team was able to rebuild its IT network in four days when it can often take weeks, according to the May 19 story. The medical center opened its main campus in about a week, though it took more than two weeks for lab and radiology services to resume.

Murfreesboro Medical is still working to determine the cause of the attack and if any patient information was compromised, the news outlet reported.
