Texas hospital keeps diverting patients after cyberattack: 5 updates

Lubbock, Texas-based UMC Health System continues to deal with the effects of a cyberattack more than a week after taking its systems offline.

Here are five things to know:

1. The University Medical Center emergency department continues to receive patients via ambulance but the hospital is now diverting "only a select number" of patients, the health system said Oct. 4. All of its other care facilities remain open.

2. The hospital, which is the only level 1 trauma center within 400 miles, initially diverted all patients coming in by ambulance after unplugging its IT network Sept. 26 to contend with a ransomware attack.

3. UMC Health System was able to open its new 24/7 Urgent Care Clinic at Health & Wellness Hospital in Lubbock on Oct. 1 amid the outage.

4. The health system said Oct. 4 it expects to make "substantial progress" on the restoration of its services in the next few days.

5. UMC Health's phone systems are now operating as normal.
