Texas hospital keeps diverting patients after cyberattack: 5 updates

Lubbock, Texas-based UMC Health System continues to deal with the effects of a cyberattack more than a week after taking its systems offline.

Here are five things to know:

1. The University Medical Center emergency department continues to receive patients via ambulance but the hospital is now diverting "only a select number" of patients, the health system said Oct. 4. All of its other care facilities remain open.

2. The hospital, which is the only level 1 trauma center within 400 miles, initially diverted all patients coming in by ambulance after unplugging its IT network Sept. 26 to contend with the ransomware attack.

3. UMC Health System was able to open its new 24/7 Urgent Care Clinic at Health & Wellness Hospital in Lubbock on Oct. 1 amid the outage.

4. The health system said Oct. 4 it expects to make "substantial progress" on the restoration of its services in the next few days.

5. UMC Health's phone systems are now operating as normal.
