Texas cancer center warns 15,000 patients of data breach

Irving, Texas-based Choice Cancer Care Treatment Center is notifying 14,673 patients of a data breach that may have exposed their protected health information.

In May, Choice Cancer Center noticed suspicious activity in a company email account. Upon further investigation with a third-party forensic firm, the center determined that an unauthorized person had gained access to the email account between May 1-21.

Immediately, Choice Cancer Center took steps to secure the employee's email account. The center is reviewing its policies and procedures while also conducing additional employee training on data privacy and security.

Patient data that may have been exposed included names and medical or health information. A limited number of driver's license numbers, Social Security numbers, credit card information and passport numbers also may have been exposed.

Choice Cancer Center said there is no evidence that patient information has been misused.
