St. Joseph, Mich.-based Spectrum Health Lakeland is notifying 1,100 patients about a data breach at its billing services vendor that may have put patients' personal information at risk, according to mlive.com.
OS, the hospital's billing services vendor, confirmed the data breach May 8, saying that an unauthorized individual gained access to an employee's email account that held information on some Spectrum Health Lakeland patients' information.
Since the data breach, there has been no evidence that patient information has been misused. However, an investigation did not determine if the information had been stolen.
Patients who were affected will receive a letter from the hospital in three to five days, mlive.com reports. Spectrum Health is also consulting with cybersecurity experts to ensure a similar incident does not happen again.
