An NBC affiliate in Florida reports that trash strewn along a local road included medical records and other personal, sensitive documents.
Bank account numbers, routing numbers, emails, Social Security numbers, tax documents and medical reports were found scattered on the side of a road near a busy intersection in Lehigh Acres, Fla.
A local woman whose documents were found among the mess said she had recycled the records two years ago. When NBC2 contacted the recycling company, a spokesperson said it is "very unlikely" that the mess resulted from its trucks, as they are equipped with GPS trackers that determined none had driven past the site.
Based on the NBC2 report, it's unclear whether the medical records belonged to any healthcare facility. Identity theft experts told the news outlet they recommend people shred any documents containing personal information before throwing them away.
