House Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, expressed support for developing a national standard when notifying individuals impacted by corporate data breaches during the committee's Equifax hearing, according to The Hill.
"I do believe that we need to ensure we have a consistent national standard for both data security and breach notification in order to better protect our consumers, hold companies accountable and ensure that this affair does not repeat itself," Mr. Hensarling said during his committee’s hearing on the Equifax breach.
After the massive Equifax breach, lawmakers have become critical of corporations' data breach notification protocols. Passing federal legislation on this matter has been addressed by both Republicans and Democrats.
Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., have been working on drafting such a law for years, while Rep. Jim Langevin, D-R.I., already reintroduced a bill to create breach notification standards.
