A Georgia hospital confirmed it fell victim to a ransomware attack.
On June 3, a hacker gained access to Jesup, Ga.-based Wayne Memorial Hospital's network, encrypted some of its data and left a ransom note on the network, the hospital said in a notice. Wayne Memorial subsequently disconnected access to its network and took some of its IT systems offline, restoring the network from data backups.
The hacker claimed to have copied certain files, but the hospital said it is still trying to determine whether the cybercriminal accessed personal information or was just trying to extort a ransom payment.
"Since the discovery of the incident, WMH moved quickly to secure our systems," CFO Greg Jones said in a statement. "Specifically, WMH added new intrusion detection and response tools, reset all passwords, and made additional enhancements to WMH's network security.
Wayne Memorial reported to HHS on Aug. 2 that 2,500 individuals were affected by the breach.
