Almost half of consumers (45 percent) believe their protected health information is more securely stored on their personal electronic devices than their healthcare providers', according to a Morphisec survey.
The 2019 Morphisec Consumer Healthcare: Cybersecurity Threat Index surveyed more than 1,000 U.S. consumers on their opinions surrounding cybersecurity threats to the healthcare industry. Morphisec is a cybersecurity software company.
Three survey insights:
1. Despite HIPAA laws that require healthcare providers to notify patients when their information has been compromised, 54 percent of survey respondents said they are unaware if their healthcare providers have been hit by a cyberattack.
2. More than 50 percent of participants said they have responsibility, along with their provider, to protect shared health information. However, almost 80 percent of respondents said they are not prepared to handle threats to their health information by themselves.
3. Respondents said they are more afraid of a health data breach (59 percent) than a hacker gaining access to in internet-connected medical device (41 percent).
