In 2023, health systems in Tennessee, California and Florida reported breaches affecting more than 1 million patients.
Here are the four largest healthcare provider data breaches of the year, according to the HIPAA Journal:
- In August, Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare notified 11.27 million patients affected in a data breach. The information was stolen from an external storage location.
- In February, San Bernardino, Calif.-based Regal Medical Group reported a data breach that compromised the health information of 3.3 million patients. The health system dealt with 11 lawsuits in the wake of the breach.
- In July, Tampa General Hospital reported a breach affecting 2.4 million patients.
- In March, Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems reported a breach affecting about 1 million patients. Ransomware gang Clop claimed responsibility for the attack.
